 We all prefer cars to provide our transportation in daily life. It is very important to have a safe journey while driving. For a safe trip, there are some security systems in the cars. At this point, the lighting systems in the vehicles must work entirely and without any problems. The headlights are the primary light source of cars, especially at night driving. With the help of the headlights, the driver can see where he is going, the road, and how and in what condition other vehicles are on the road. While driving in the car, a small problem in the lighting can lead to accidents. For this reason, it is hazardous for the bulb to break down and affect the driver's field of vision.


What is the Vehicle Bulb Types?

Headlight bulbs work on the same principle as those that light up our homes. Glass bulbs containing filaments that glow when current is passed through are called headlight bulbs. With the shine of the filament, the road is illuminated with reflectors with particular angles on the headlights. Every car needs different bulbs according to the lighting design and structure. Some are headlight bulbs, fog bulbs, stop bulbs, turn signals, and parking and interior lights. Each of the bulbs works with different sockets depending on the make and model of your vehicle. For the sockets to fit your car correctly, you must perfectly know the shape and size of the base of the bulb. As Brio, we will examine the headlight bulbs and signals.

Halogen, xenon, and LED in today's automobile lighting systems. There are three types of headlight bulbs. The bulb types generally used in vehicles are H and T-coded bulbs. As Brio, we will examine H-coded bulbs and xenon headlights. H-coded bulbs are used in automobiles' high beams, low beams, and fog bulbs. The most used codes are: H1, H3, H4, H7, H8/H9/H10, H11, HB3, HB4 and H27 coded bulbs.

H-coded bulbs, also known as Halogen lamps, are incandescent lamps containing a small number of halogens such as iodine or bromine. We can say that halogen bulbs are improved versions of classic incandescent lamps. Although incandescent lights are still used in some classic cars today, they have been replaced by halogens. Halogens represent monovalent elements that can quickly form negative ions. While there are five halogens in nature, only iodine and bromine features are used in lighting technology. The main reason for this is that the tungsten filament in the bulb prevents breakage and darkening. When we look at the characteristics of halogen lamps, they mainly produce a lot of heat and have a yellow hue. Comparing it with other bulb types, they are relatively cheaper. In addition, there are some disadvantages as well; although halogens have a shorter lifespan than other bulbs, they also offer a shorter viewing distance.

Unlike halogen, Xenon headlights, high-intensity discharge lamps do not need a metal filament to create light. Instead, it generates light by creating a high-voltage arc between electrodes. To describe this working principle, we can compare it to a controlled lightning strike inside a small tube. When we look at the most distinctive feature of the bulbs filled with xenon gas, we can say that they have a bright white or bluish light. Therefore, they generate less heat than halogen bulbs. However, to reach the desired brightness, xenon bulbs need to get sufficient heat and therefore spend some time. They produce bright and diffused light with long wavelengths and provide a safe journey, especially at night. They also last longer than halogens. It is generally preferred for an aesthetic appearance.

Lamps used in vehicles are divided into standard and soft lights, according to how they are made. Standard bulbs are commonly used in the automobile industry.

In general, 6-8, 12-16 24-32 volt bulbs are used in vehicles.

Bulbs by Flemish Connection and Number

In bulbs, the filament connection is made in two ways. First, one end of the filament is removed as insulated from the bottom, and the other is connected to the socket from the inside. These bulbs are called standard bulbs. In the different types of connection, both ends of the filament come out insulated from the bottom. They are called insulated bulbs. According to the way they are connected, they are divided into straight nails and cross nails. According to the number of filaments, bulbs are of two types, monofilament, and double filament. Double filament bulbs; In places with placement problems, two filaments are mounted in the same bulb and used for space saving. (We can give examples such as parking + brake, low beam + high beam.)


Finding Auto Bulb Types

Today, in automobiles; Instead, many different types of bulbs are used depending on the model and brand. When choosing a lighting product for your car, it is essential to analyze the model of the vehicle and the characteristics of the light needed. There are several methods to find your vehicle's bulb type (code). You can search online by specifying the vehicle's make, model, and bulb via the internet. If you can't get a result, you can find out from your vehicle's user manual or by calling your service.

In the exterior lighting of the vehicles, there are headlight bulbs, signals, fog bulbs, parking lights, and stop bulbs. Light bulb selection should be made, taking into account environmental and weather conditions.

Symptoms Indicating A Headlight Bulb Needs To Be Replaced

  1. If one headlight turns on dimmer or differently than the other while driving, you can replace your headlight bulb. 
  2.  If the headlight bulb flickers when turned on and causes similar problems, you can return your headlight bulb.  
  3. If your car's headlights are not working, you should definitely replace your headlight bulb.
